Updated April 17, 2017

Saving a PDF with a transparent background can be useful for a number of graphics applications. By using powerful graphics editing software (Adobe Photoshop) you can easily save a PDF (an Adobe file format) with a transparent background. This process can be completed in a few simple steps, and can be applied to a number of different Photoshop projects that you may have.

Open Adobe Photoshop on your computer.

Select "File -> Open..." and open the file you wish to save as a PDF with a transparent background. Make sure the background is transparent, as denoted by the grey-and-white checkboard in the Photoshop file. If the background is not transparent, select the graphical content you want (using the selection tool of your choice, such as the Magic Wand Tool) and select "Edit -> Copy." Then, select "File -> New..." and in the "Background Contents:" field select the option "Transparent." Select "Ok" and then select "Edit -> Paste" to paste this content onto the transparent background.

Click "File -> Save As..." and select "Photoshop PDF" in the "Format:" section. Name the file as you wish in the "File name:" section. Select "Save."

Select "Save PDF" to save the file. In Adobe Reader, transparent backgrounds will appear white.
