You can sort e-mail by sender, subject, date and size in most e-mail clients. Thunderbird includes a different way to organise e-mails, a way which groups messages into conversation threads. For example, if you e-mailed your spouse about vacation plans last month, then last week and then yesterday, all the e-mails appear together with no other, unrelated e-mails in-between. This view can take some getting used to, however, and you can toggle back to a straight by-date view instead.

Tips and warnings

  • If you've installed a Thunderbird add-on that organises conversations, such as Thunderbird Conversations, disable it by clicking "Tools," then "Add-ons." Select the add-on and click "Disable." Restart Thunderbird and follow any other on-screen instructions to complete the process.
