Owners of some models of Compaq Presario notebooks report problems with the headphone jack on their laptops after upgrading to Windows 7 from Vista. For many Presario models, Windows 7 drivers are not available, making the upgrade to the new operating system more difficult. In most cases, though, the problem is not with the older driver, but the method used to install it. Using Windows Compatibility Mode, you can use the older sound driver for the Presario laptop and resolve the headphone jack issue in a few minutes.

Instructions

  1. 1

Navigate to the HP Support website and download the latest Windows Vista audio drivers for your model Presario laptop. Save the driver file to your computer.

  2. 2

Click "Start," then "Computer." Browse to the folder where you save the audio driver file. Highlight the file, then right-click it. Click "Troubleshoot compatibility" on the pop-up menu. After the "Program Compatibility" window appears, click "Next."

  3. 3

Wait a few seconds for Windows 7 to scan the file and determine what might make the driver file incompatible with the new operating system. After Windows finishes the scan and displays a new window, click and select "The program worked in earlier versions of Windows but won't install or run now." Click the "Next" button.

  4. 4

Click the "Windows Vista" option in the "Which version of Windows did this program work on before?" window, then the "Next" button.

  5. 5

Click the "Next" button and to test the audio driver with the Windows Vista compatibility settings. After the audio driver installation wizard appears on the screen, follow the on-screen instructions to install the driver.

  6. 6

Restart your computer after the driver installation finishes and Windows 7 prompts you to do so. After you restart your computer, the headphone jacks on your Compaq Presario laptop should function properly.

  7. 7

Insert the headphone plug into the jack on the Presario laptop. Play audio files using Windows Media Player or another application that produces sound. You should be able to heard sound normally through the headphones.
