Owners of some models of Compaq Presario notebooks report problems with the headphone jack on their laptops after upgrading to Windows 7 from Vista. For many Presario models, Windows 7 drivers are not available, making the upgrade to the new operating system more difficult. In most cases, though, the problem is not with the older driver, but the method used to install it. Using Windows Compatibility Mode, you can use the older sound driver for the Presario laptop and resolve the headphone jack issue in a few minutes.

Click "Start," then "Computer." Browse to the folder where you save the audio driver file. Highlight the file, then right-click it. Click "Troubleshoot compatibility" on the pop-up menu. After the "Program Compatibility" window appears, click "Next."
Wait a few seconds for Windows 7 to scan the file and determine what might make the driver file incompatible with the new operating system. After Windows finishes the scan and displays a new window, click and select "The program worked in earlier versions of Windows but won't install or run now." Click the "Next" button.
