How to Make the GLaDOS Voice

Updated February 21, 2017

GLaDOS, the robotic antagonist of the "Portal" game series, speaks with a voice between robot and human. Unlike many robots, GLaDOS speaks with a voice than increases and decreases in pitch. There are several methods of turning a piece of text into a GLaDOS-style voice. The simplest method involves using an automatic GLaDOS voice generator while the more complex methods require you to download and install sound-editing computer programs.

Navigate to a free voice website and download a female voice. Download and install Wavepad (See Resources).

Double-click on the Wavepad icon to open it. Click on the "Tool" menu and scroll to "Text to Speech." Select the female voice and enter the desired text in the text field.

Click on the "Effects" menu and select "Pitch." Enter a number between 100 and 110. Click on the "Effects" menu and select "Speed Change." Enter "90."

Highlight an area of the speech and open the "Pitch" tool. Increase or decrease the pitch by entering a slightly higher or lower number. Change the pitch of several areas.

Visit an online text-to-voice program (See Resources). Click on the "Voice" drop down and select a female voice. Enter text and click on the "Download" button.

Download and install Cakewalk Sonar 6 and Melodyne (See Resources). Right-click on the downloaded audio file and scroll to "Open With" then "Sonar 6."

Right-click on the track and scroll to "V-Vocal." Click on the "Note" knob and slide it to "100." Click on the "Vibrato" knob and slide it to "0." Slide the "Sense" and "Follow" knobs to "100" and the "Shift" knob to "10." Press the keys "Ctrl" and "S" to save your file.

Click on the "File" menu and scroll to "Export" to export the file. Open Melodyne, click on the "File" menu and scroll to "Import."

Highlight the file and press "OK." Highlight the entire length of audio and click on the "Pitch Modulation" button. Drag the "Pitch Modulation" lines up and down slightly at different parts of the clip.

Visit the online GLaDOS voice generator at

Enter the desired voice in the "Text" field and press "OK."

Wait for the generator to create a file and click on the "Download" button.
