Oblivion is a single-player role-playing game where players create a character and explore and fight through a virtual fantasy world. In Oblivion, the land of Cyrodill is under attack from demons, and the player must find a way to defeat the demons and save the land. NPCs or non-player characters that go unconscious in Oblivion are characters that are essential to the storyline. These characters cannot be killed, rather, when their health is zero, they become unconscious for a few minutes. To kill these characters, a player needs to change the game settings.

Instructions

  1. 1

Open the "Program Files" folder on your computer. If you are using Windows 7, you may need to open the "Program Files (x86)" folder instead.

  2. 2

Open up the "Oblivion" folder on your hard drive. If you installed Oblivion from a CD, open the "Bethesda" folder, and open the "Oblivion" folder. If you installed Oblivion on Steam, open up the "Steam" folder, then open the "steamapps" folder, then open "common," and open "Oblivion."

  3. 3

Right click on the "Oblivion.ini" file and click "Copy." Right click on the empty space below the files and click "Paste." This will create a file called "Oblivion Copy." If there are problems with the game after changing the ini file, delete it and change the name of the "Oblivion Copy" file to "Oblivion."

  4. 4

Open the "Oblivion.ini" document in the "Oblivion" folder using Notepad or another simple text editor.

  5. 5

Press "Control" and "F" to search through the document. In the box, type "bEssentialTakeNoDamage." In the file, it should say "bEssentialTakeNoDamage=1." Change the 1 to a 0.

  6. 6

Use "Control" and "F" to search the document again, this time search for "bForceReloadOnEssentialCharacterDeath." Change the number after "bForceReloadOnEssentialCharacterDeath=1" to 0.

  7. 7

Save the "Oblivion.ini" file and launch Oblivion.

Tips and warnings

  • Killing characters using this method may break the storyline and make it impossible to finish certain quests. You may not be able to beat the game if you kill certain characters.
