How to Make My Network Security Key Visible
Keep your wireless network key safe from prying eyes. (Thomas Northcut/Photodisc/Getty Images)

Wireless network keys are used to protect unauthorised access to your Internet connection from outsiders. It is often necessary to amend a key or recover one if it has been lost. Wireless network keys can be viewed in a plain text format to make it easier to set it to a preferred phrase or keyword. Each wireless connection can be changed via the network subsystem of the Control Panel. The phrase or keyword used in the phrase must be kept private.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

  1. 1

Go to "Start," select "Control Panel," choose "Network and Internet," select "Network and Sharing Center" and click "Manage Wireless Networks."

  2. 2

Double-click on the wireless connection, select the "Security" tab.

  3. 3

Click the "Show Characters" check box. The encryption key will be displayed in plain text.
