After developing a friendship online with someone in a chat room, you can move the conversation to a private setting where you can video chat one-on-one. Though you cannot start a private chat through most chat rooms with a webcam, you can give the user your instant messenger information and video chat one-on-one through your instant messenger of choice. Make sure your webcam is plugged in before logging into your instant messaging account.

Log into your instant messenger of choice. Send a request to add your new friend to your friend list if you use Windows Live or Yahoo Messenger. Add your friend's name to your buddy list if you use AOL Instant Messenger.
Click your friend's name on the buddy list to open a private chat window.
Click the camera icon in the corner of the screen or click "video call." This will send a request to open a feed between your friend's camera and yours.
Close the window at any time to turn off your webcam and end the conversation.
