Jack Skellington is the main character in the popular film, "The Nightmare Before Christmas." As the Pumpkin King, Jack is the ruler of Halloween Town and lives in a world where it is always Halloween. Jack is a skeleton and his trademark look is a pinstripe suit with a bat-shaped tie. No matter what your age, you can make a Jack Skellington costume at home with items that can be found at your local thrift store.

  1. 1

Wear a white turtleneck shirt and a black-and-white pinstripe suit. Use a black suit jacket and dress trousers if you are unable to find a pinstripe suit. Paint pinstripes on with white fabric paint.

  2. 2

Draw the head of a bat with a three inch circumference on a piece of cardboard. Cut the bat head out. Cut out a piece of black fabric large enough to cover both sides of the cardboard bat head. Outline one side of the bat head with glue and place it on top of the black fabric. Outline the opposite side of the bat head with glue and fold the fabric over the cardboard. Draw two small circles on one side of the bat head with white fabric paint. These are the bat's eyes.

  3. 3

Fold the remainder of the black fabric in half. Measure the length from the centre of your chest to an inch past your shoulder and record this measurement. Draw two bat wings on the fabric. Each wing should be as large as the shoulder measurement. Connect the two bat wings in the middle so that you are able to attach the wings behind the bat head. Cut the bat wings out.

  4. 4

Lay one layer of the bat wings down. Outline the wings with pieces of thin, bendable wire. Place the other layer of the wings on top of the wire. Sew the two layers of wings together with the wire along the inside edge by hand with a needle and thread or with a sewing machine. The wire helps keep the shape of the wings.

  5. 5

Draw horizontal pinstripes on the wings with white fabric paint. Wait for the paint to dry, then pin the wings behind the bat head with a safety pin. Use another safety pin to attach the bat to the front collar of the white shirt.

  6. 6

Draw two large circles around your eyes with black face paint. Use a make up brush for precision. Follow the natural contours of your eye socket, and colour in the entire circle. Start at the middle of one cheek and draw a smile that extends to the opposite side of your face with the black face paint. Paint your lips black and trace over the black line to make it thicker. Draw small vertical lines over the black mouth from one end to the other.

  7. 7

Use a make-up sponge to cover the remainder of your face with white face paint. Paint carefully near the black edges. Use a make up brush to paint the small spaces between the vertical black lines. Cover your hair with a white beanie or shower cap.

  8. 8

Wear a pair of skeleton gloves on your hands. Use a pair of plain black gloves if you are unable to find skeleton gloves. Paint bones on the gloves with white fabric paint.

  9. 9

Wear a pair of black socks and dress shoes on your feet.
