A Christmas table setting isn't complete without themed chair covers. Making chair covers is simple, and you can customise them to your taste. Pick a favourite Christmas symbol and feature them on chair covers or match them to the table decorations. Whimsical chair covers add a more festive touch to holiday meals. The covers instantly add decoration to a dining room or any room where you have a gathering such as an office holiday party, wedding reception or church luncheon.

  1. 1

Measure the chairs. Start at the bottom of the back where the slipcover will hang. Bring the tape measure over the chair and down as far as you would like the cover to reach. Measure the chair across the back to get a width. Add an inch to allow one-half inch for a seam allowance on each side.

  2. 2

Cut the white felt with scissors according to the measurements.

  3. 3

Place the felt across the top of the chair and pull the sides over the back and front of the chair. Adjust the felt, including cutting if necessary, to make sure the chair cover will reach where you want it to. Pin the sides along each seam with straight pins and remove the cover from the chair.

  4. 4

Glue the edges of the chair cover together using standard fabric glue. Squeeze a thin line of glue into the seams of the felt and press it together to adhere it. Remove the pins and allow the glue to dry.

  5. 5

Cut felt decorations for the cover. To make a snowman, cut out black circles for the eyes and buttons, and add a red piece of felt for a scarf. Make a top hat from black felt and create a carrot-shaped nose with orange felt.

  6. 6

Glue the decorations into place using repositionable glue, which lets you pull decorations off to change them for another season or to use them again. Apply only a light layer of the repositionable glue.

Tips and warnings

  • Select brown felt instead of white to make a gingerbread man, or make red and green covers using red felt and green felt holly leaves.
  • Cut out different decorations for other holidays and apply them with repositionable glue so you can reuse the covers.
