How to Run AVG in DOS

Updated February 21, 2017

AVG is an international Internet security company that specialises in antimalware software for home and business users. AVG can be launched from your desktop like any other program. Alternatively, you can run a scan using AVG from the Command Prompt, also known as MS-DOS. This is a viable option if a virus has infected your computer and is preventing you from launching AVG from your desktop.

Click "Start," type "cmd" into the search field and press "Enter" to open the Command Prompt.

Type "avgscanx /COMP" into the Command Prompt and press "Enter" if you are using a Windows 32-bit operating system. If you are using a Windows 64-bit operating system, type "avgscana /COMP" and press "Enter." AVG now scans your entire computer for malware.

Type "exit" and press "Enter" to close the Command Prompt.

Tip

To access AVG Help, type "avgscanx /HELP" into the Command Prompt and press "Enter" if you are using a Windows 32-bit operating system; if you are using a Windows 64-bit operating system, type "avgscana /HELP" and press "Enter." AVG Help provides instructions for how to run additional scans, such as a quick scan or a scan excluding certain files.
