Create fondant nativity characters for a festive Christmas celebration. Place the fondant figures of Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus on top of a Christmas cake or use them as decorations on a food table. The fondant nativity scene can also make great party favours for guests at a religious Christmas celebration. The characters are not difficult to make, but make them at least 24 to 48 hours in advance to give the fondant plenty of time to harden.

Instructions

    Mary

  1. 1

Divide a package of fondant into six small bowls. Tint five of the bowls of fondant a different colour: light blue, yellow, a dark peach or tan, light brown and dark brown. Leave the fondant in one bowl white. To colour the fondant, place a little bit of food colouring gel onto the end of a toothpick and mix it into the fondant. Add more gel as necessary to darken the hue.

  2. 2

Separate a 2 1/2-inch by 1 1/2-inch piece of white fondant and shape it into an oblong oval with a flat top and bottom to make the body. Separate a 1-inch section of dark peach or tan fondant and roll it to make the head. Insert a toothpick into one end of the ball and insert it into the top flat section of the body.

  3. 3

Roll out a small piece of light brown fondant to a thickness of about 1/8 inch. Drape the small piece on top of the head to make hair.

  4. 4

Use black icing marker to make the eyes, a small ball of fondant for the nose and pink icing marker to make the mouth.

  5. 5

Roll two pieces of light blue fondant into tube shapes that measure about 1/2 inch by 1 1/2 inches. Insert a small piece of a toothpick into one end of each and press the toothpick into the top of the oblong oval to make the arms. Use two small pieces of the dark peach or tan fondant to make hands. Moisten the backs of each piece with water and press against the ends of the arms.

  6. 6

Roll out a piece of light blue fondant to about 1/8-inch thick and cut two 1-inch by 2 1/2-inch rectangles. Drape these underneath the arms and up against the body to make clothing.

  7. 7

Roll out a small piece of white fondant to about 1/8 inch thick, cut a circle with a diameter of about 3 inches and drape it over the hair to make a head covering.

    Joseph

  1. 1

Shape a 2 1/2-inch by 1 1/2-inch piece of light brown fondant into the oblong oval with flat top and bottom for the body. Shape a 1-inch section of dark peach or tan fondant into a sphere for the head. Insert the toothpick into the sphere and then into the top flat portion of the body to make the head. Roll out a small piece of light brown fondant to 1/8 inch thick and drape it on top of the head to make hair.

  2. 2

Use black icing marker to make the eyes, a small ball of fondant for the nose and pink icing marker to make the mouth.

  3. 3

Roll two pieces of dark brown fondant into 1/2-inch by 1 1/2-inch tube shapes. Insert pieces of toothpicks into one end of each and insert the toothpick ends into the top of the body to make arms. Shape two small pieces of the peach or tan fondant into hands, moisten with water and press against the arm ends.

  4. 4

Roll out a piece of dark brown fondant to 1/8 inch thick and cut two 1-inch by 2 1/2-inch rectangles. Drape underneath arms and against body to make clothing.

  5. 5

Roll a piece of dark brown fondant to 1/8 inch thick, cut a 3-inch diameter circle and drape over hair for head covering.

    Baby Jesus

  1. 1

Shape a piece of dark brown fondant into a 1-inch thick rectangle that measures 2 1/2 inches by 1 1/2 inches.

  2. 2

Roll out a piece of yellow fondant 1/4 inch thick. Cut a 2-inch by 1-inch rectangle and make slits all along the four sides. Place the shape on top of the brown rectangle to make hay.

  3. 3

Shape a 3/4-inch by 1-inch piece of white fondant into an oval and place it in the centre of the hay.

  4. 4

Shape a piece of white fondant into a 1/2-inch sphere. Place it at the top of the white fondant oval to make the head.

  5. 5

Use black icing marker to make the eyes, a small ball of fondant for the nose and pink icing marker to make the mouth.
