Your iPad uses the same operating system and works with almost all of the same applications as an iPhone. The microSIM card in your iPad only handles data over 3G Internet, and won't send or receive voice calls or text messages. Several Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) apps allow the iPad to send SMS messages. Your iPad will gain most of the same functions as a cellphone when you install VoIP software.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Tap the "App Store" app on your iPad. Tap the "Search" box and type in "Talkatone." Tap the download link to install the app.

  2. 2

Tap "Create an Account" and type in your e-mail address, username and password. Tap "OK" to log in to your account.

  3. 3

Tap "Contacts" at the bottom of the screen. Tap "Add a Contact" to add contacts to your list. Type in the name and phone number of a contact and tap "Add."

  4. 4

Tap the contact in your list. Type an SMS message into the text box at the bottom of the page and tap "Send" to send the message.

Tips and warnings

  • Sign in to Talkatone with your Google Voice account to make free calls and texts from your iPad to anyone in North America. SMS messages will appear to come from the cell number associated with your Google Voice account.
