People create reborn dolls from any type of soft vinyl doll. Painted on features are removed and new eyes are inserted into the eye sockets. The dolls are repainted, so the features are more realistic and a soft wig is added. Wigs for dolls run from £3 and up depending on the material but making one is simple using a hot glue gun and mohair. Anyone is capable of making a doll wig but, if a child makes one, parental supervision is advised.
- Skill level:
Things you need
- One knee high
- Plastic bottle with rounded base about the size of the head
- Container to hold the plastic bottle up
- 8 ½-inch by 11-inch Piece of paper
- Sewing machine
- Hot glue gun
- Hot glue sticks
Slide the knee high over the dolls head, so it fits right behind the ears. Pinch loose end of the knee high at the top of the head and cut off the excess material. Pin the material together with a stickpin and remove it from the doll's head.
Sew the pinned material in place by hand using a needle and thread. This makes the base for the wig. Place the base onto the rounded end of the plastic bottle and place the top end of the bottle into a container that will hold the rounded end up in the air.
Put the paper on a flat surface with one of the 11-inch sides facing you. Measure down the left side of the paper and put a mark at every inch. Repeat the procedure on the right side. Connect the two marks on the paper using a horizontal line. Repeat this procedure until you have nine parallel horizontal lines on the paper.
Pull loose pieces of the mohair. Lay them across the top line, so the pieces lay vertically across the line. Spread a thin layer all the way across the line. Sew straight across the line. Bend the bottom end of the mohair up out of the way. Repeat the procedure on each line. Pull the rows of sewn mohair loose from the paper.
Glue the first row of mohair along the bottom edge of the wig base stretched on the bottle. Glue the second row 1/2 inch above the first row. Trim off any excess mohair. Continue following this pattern as you go up the wig base. Save the trimmed excess pieces for filling in any gaps in the wig. Let the glue dry completely before attaching it to the doll head using hot glue.
