Diaper bags are convenient baby travel accessories to carry around extra diapers, clothing and other necessities, but you need a special slender pocket to store bottles in to keep them upright when full. You can make a diaper bag with special bottle pockets at home from your choice of quilted fabric. Use an understated tone-on-tone quilted fabric for the diaper bag or use a patterned quilted fabric for a more flashy baby accessory.
- Skill level:
Things you need
- Diaper bag pattern
- Quilted fabric
- Lining fabric
- Sewing needle
- Sewing pins
- 1 ½-inch-wide canvas strapping
- Hook and loop fastener strips
Trace two 13-inch-by-20-inch rectangles onto your quilted fabric to make the front and back of the diaper bag. Trace two 13-inch-by-4-inch rectangles onto another piece of quilted fabric for the sides of the diaper bag. Trace one 20-inch-by-4-inch rectangle onto quilted fabric to make the bottom of the bag. Cut out each of the shapes.
Lay each rectangle cutout onto a piece of lining fabric and cut out corresponding pieces of lining fabric using the quilted cutouts as guides.
Join the quilted fabric to the lining fabric. Place the lining fabric on the wrong side of the corresponding quilted fabric piece and sew a seam all the way around each piece.
Line up the long edge of the bottom piece and the bottom edge of the front panel piece with right sides together. Sew the pieces together along this edge. Line up the other long edge of the bottom piece with the bottom edge of the back panel piece with right sides together. Sew the pieces together along this edge.
Flip over the joined pieces. Stand the front and back pieces upright and pin the pieces for the sides of the diaper bag in place with the right sides of the fabric facing in. Sew the sides to the bottom, front and back of the bag.
Flip the diaper bag right side out and make the shoulder straps. Cut a piece of 1 ½-inch-wide canvas strapping to a length of 30 inches. Sew one short end to the inside of the bag at the top of one short side. Sew the other short end of strapping to the inside of the bag at the top of the other short side.
Sew in a long strip of hook-and-loop fastener. Sew one rectangle piece to the inside top centre of the front of the bag and sew the corresponding rectangle to the same spot on the inside back panel of the bag.
Make the pockets. Cut two 7-inch-long pieces of the quilted fabric to the width of one short side of the bag plus 1 inch.
Place the pieces right side down and fold over 1/2 inch along both long sides and one short side on each piece. Pin these folds but do not sew. These folds will be used to attach the pockets to the diaper bag.
Fold over 1/2 inch at the remaining short end of each piece and sew this fold in place to make a smooth edge. This is the top of the bottle pockets.
Pin the pockets to the short sides of the bag. Insert pins through the 1/2 inch of folded fabric as you attach the pockets to the bottom edges of each short side of the bag. Insert the pins through the 1/2 inch folded fabric as you pin the pockets to the side edges of the bag as well. Sew from inside the bag and through the 1/2 inch of folded fabric so that the seam line is not visible from the outside of the bag.
