Adobe Illustrator is primarily a vector graphics application, so it does not have the capabilities for editing raster (bitmap) graphics images that Adobe's other main product Photoshop has. However, it does have some ability to make changes to these images. For example, if you have placed an image as a background in a document that you would like to give a blurred appearance to, this is easily and quickly done.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Start Adobe Illustrator. Select "File" from the menu and choose "Open." In the dialogue that appears, locate and open a document containing an inserted image that you would like to blur.

  2. 2

Select "Effects" from the menu at the top and choose "Blur." From the options, choose "Gaussian Blur."

  3. 3

Adjust the "Radius" slider in the dialogue until you like the preview and click "OK." Save your work.
