Pencil boxes are an essential part of going back to school, especially for elementary-age children. Purchase an inexpensive box this year and let your child decorate it any way he wishes. Not only will he have fun, but the box will reflect his own personality. From paint pens and stickers to foam shapes and collages, your child can let his creativity shine through.

  1. 1

Purchase paint pens in several different colours. Help your child write his name on the front. Allow him free rein to decorate the box as he sees fit. He can put hearts and stars on it, or write the name of his favourite sports team. If you like, you can include his homeroom number on the bottom of the box.

  2. 2

Stick foam shapes to the pencil box. Buy sets of them from the craft store in many different themes. Let your child pick out the set at the store so he is sure to like the theme. Purchase a foam alphabet so the child's name can go on the top. Cut out your own shapes and designs from large sheets of foam.

  3. 3

Allow the child to place stickers all over his pencil box. Most children love stickers, and they are very inexpensive to purchase. Stickers can be found at most stores, so it is an easy way to get decorations.

  4. 4

Cut out pictures from your child's favourite magazine. Sports figures, actors and words or phrases are good items to cut out. Your child should be old enough to cut them out alone. Use clear packing tape to affix the papers to the pencil box; not only will the tape help them stick, but it will protect the paper from wear and tear. If the child gets bored with the pictures, they are easily removed and replaced.

Tips and warnings

  • Plastic or wooden boxes are both easily decorated.
