How to Make Splatter Art
Create abstract art with splatter paint. (Hemera Technologies/ Images)

Probably one of the most famous modern artists, Jackson Pollock, used a splatter technique to create abstract art. The key to splatter art is to not let your painting tool touch the canvas. Splatter art tends to be chaotic and random, making each piece that's created something unique. Children as well as adults can enjoy this activity, so put on some old clothes and start painting.

Skill level:

Things you need

  • Dust sheet
  • Tempera or acrylic paint
  • Blank canvas or butcher paper
  • Paper plates
  • Disposable cups
  • Artist palette
  • Paintbrushes

  1. 1

Put down a large dust sheet or piece of plastic onto a flat surface. You need to set up in an area where there is plenty of room around you.

  2. 2

Place your canvas or butcher paper on top of the dust sheet. You want enough dust sheet around the edges of the canvas so that when you are painting, the paint won't get all over the surface beneath.

  3. 3

Use a water-based paint like acrylic or tempera.

  4. 4

Put the paint onto an artist's palette, paper plates or into disposable cups.

  5. 5

Dip a paintbrush, toothbrush, sponge or even your hands into the different colours of paint. Drip the paint onto your blank canvas. If you are finding the paint is not dripping well, add water to dilute it. Move your hand around with a full brush of paint in different motions over the canvas to create different patterns.

  6. 6

Flick the paint onto the canvas. Load a paintbrush or toothbrush with paint and hit it against your hand so the paint splatters onto the canvas.

Tips and warnings

  • There is no right or wrong way to splatter paint. Use different techniques and have fun with it.
  • Wear clothing that you don't care about because the paint will get everywhere.
