Putting together a sports costume for kids can be easy and may not cost much at all. If your child wants to be an athlete for Halloween, get creative and come up with a costume that will be one of a kind and cool. Dig through everyone's closets, make a trip to the thrift store or craft store, and outfit your kid in a homemade costume that will represent his love of all things sporty.
- Skill level:
Things you need
- Football jersey
- Helmet, shoulder pads
- Fabric paint
- Duct tape
- Socks and cloth or boxing gloves
Look at what you have on hand. Go through closets and drawers and see what could be the foundation of a sports themed costume for a child. If your husband has a football jersey with his favourite team on it, that could be a start. A bathrobe could be a boxer's robe. Satin shorts and a tank top could look like a basketball or volleyball player's outfit, and a swimsuit could be a swimmer's costume.
Embellish items. Take a plain tank top and use fabric paint, felt or duct tape to make a number on the back and decorate the arm holes to look like a basketball or volleyball player's jersey. Decorate a plain swimsuit, and add designs to the back of a robe that a boxer might have on his robe, such as a boxing nickname or logo.
Put together the costume. Pair a football jersey with some trousers or leggings, and any other football items you may have. Shoulder pads and a helmet can be borrowed from the local athletic department, and sneakers can be worn for a football player costume. Put the lettered tank top with shiny exercise shorts and sneakers for a basketball player, and put athletic shorts with the decorated robe over it for a boxer's outfit. Make boxing gloves by stuffing socks with fabric or ask around to see if you know anyone that has some.
Add props. For a football player, carry a football. Basketball players can have a basketball and volleyball costumes need a volleyball. Swimmers can wear goggles and fins if you can find some, and a boxer can make a champion's belt out of cardboard and a regular belt.
