You can always unfollow people on Twitter you do not want to see in your timeline. This removes most of their tweets from your timeline and prevents them from sending you direct messages. However, they are still included in your timeline when they put your username in a post. To completely remove people from your Twitter timeline, you can block them. This removes them regardless of how hard they may try to get your attention.
