Tumblr is a blog network that encourages user interaction by allowing bloggers to follow each other and aggregating users' posts on a central dashboard. Bloggers then have the option to reply, reblog and submit posts to others' blogs. The website allows encourages bloggers to build relationships through its "Ask" feature, which allows users to ask and answer questions. Building a strong social network on a new website can be difficult, so Tumblr allows you to locate your friends who may be using the service by importing their e-mail addresses from your AOL, Gmail, Hotmal, MSN or Yahoo! account.

    Navigate your Web browser to the Tumblr home page, and log in with your e-mail address and password.

    Click the "Goodies" link at the top of your Tumblr Dashboard.

    Scroll to the bottom of the page, and click the "Find Your Contacts" link.

    Type your AOL, Gmail, Hotmail, MSN or Yahoo! e-mail address and password, and click the "Look up Contacts" button.

    Click the "+follow" button next to each of your contacts you want to follow.

Tips and warnings

  • Note that Tumblr's contact lookup feature will only work if your contacts have consented to their blogs being made searchable via their e-mail addresses. This option is enabled by default, but some bloggers may have disabled it for privacy reasons.
  • Be aware of Tumblr's privacy policy before entering the password to your e-mail account. The company's policy does not allow them to store your e-mail address or password, sell your information or send unsolicited e-mail to you or your contacts. Nevertheless, if you have privacy concerns, do not use Tumblr's contact lookup feature.
