Photoshop Thumbtack Tutorial
Create a thumbtack in Photoshop (Jupiterimages/liquidlibrary/Getty Images)

Manually create the image of a thumbtack in Photoshop to add a realistic element to a scrapbook project or corkboard photograph. Photoshop offers many ways to create a thumbtack image, from gradient manipulation to brush templates. One way is to use the "Elipse Tool" to create the image of a 3-D thumbtack.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

  1. 1

Click on the "Shape Tool" from the toolbar and select the "Elipse Tool" from the pop-up menu. Click your mouse and drag the curser to create a small circle. Select the colour grey from the colour palate in the right hand corner of the screen.

  2. 2

Click "Layer" at the top of the screen and "Add New Layer." Select the "Elipse Tool" and draw a smaller circle inside the circle already drawn. The smaller circle should be positioned off centre. Select the colour black from the colour palate.

  3. 3

Create a new layer as in Step 2. Use the "Elipse Tool" to draw a circle that is slightly bigger than the darker circle and slightly smaller than the circle in Step 1. Position this circle so that it overlaps the darker circle. Leave enough of the dark circle to create a quarter moon. Colour this circle the same colour as the circle in Step 1.

Tips and warnings

  • If you want to create more depth to the thumbtack, set the "Gradient Overlay" to 100 per cent opacity and 100 per cent scale.
