A ZIF connector secures the ribbon cables of various components to ports on computers. For example, the keyboard on your laptop connects to the motherboard via a port on the top of the computer, and a ZIF connector locks the ribbon cable to the port. If you need to remove a component locked to a ZIF connector, you can unlock it in a matter of seconds.

Instructions

  1. 1

    Turn off your computer.

  2. 2

Locate the ZIF connector on the port that the ribbon cable in question is plugged into. A latch is on top of the ZIF connector.

  3. 3

Lift up the latch until it won't go up any higher, using your fingernail or the tip of a screwdriver.

  4. 4

Unplug the ribbon cable from the ZIF connector. To attach a ribbon cable, plug one in and press the latch down until it locks in place.
