GIMP is a popular freeware photo and image editing suite that runs on the Unix, OS X and Windows operating systems. GIMP offers a number of photo and image editing tools previously only available to users of costly professional-grade software suites. Despite the fact that GIMP is available free of charge, a whole host of up-to-date support documentation is available directly from the developers that provides detailed and helpful information on how to use the tools included with the software.

    Launch the GIMP program.

    Load a document by selecting "Open" from the file menu and navigating to the document's location on the hard drive.

    Select the "Pencil" tool by clicking on the pencil icon on the left hand side of the screen.

    Click directly below the text that you want to be underlined.

  5. 5

    Press and hold the "Shift" key.

  6. 6

    Drag the full length of the text with the mouse while simultaneously holding down the "Shift" key.

    Release the "Shift" key to complete the underlining process.
