Off-the-shoulder shirts are shirts with very large neck holes that allow them to drape off of one shoulder. An off-the-shoulder top reveals a wide expanse of shoulder and collar area if you wear it alone; alternatively, you can put a tank top underneath for a fun '80s look. While they are common in stores and boutiques, you can make your own simple off-the-shoulder top using a T-shirt.

Instructions

  1. 1

Lay the T-shirt out on a flat surface.

  2. 2

Cut the collar away from the T-shirt, cutting closely to the collar. Do not remove more fabric than is absolutely necessary.

  3. 3

Try the T-shirt on. With the absence of the collar, the T-shirt's neckline stretches dramatically. In most cases, this is enough for the T-shirt to drop off your shoulder. If you want a bigger neckline, continue to Step 4.

  4. 4

Cut a ½-inch strip of fabric from around the neckline, widening it in all directions.

  5. 5

Try the T-shirt on again. It takes the removal of very little fabric to widen, so proceed slowly. The fabric of the T-shirt curls on itself and does not fray, so you do not need to hem it.

Tips and warnings

  • Cut away some of the T-shirt's sleeves and the bottom 4 inches of the T-shirt's bottom hem for a more authentic '80s look.
