How to make Tarzan & Jane Halloween costumes

Updated April 17, 2017

Tarzan and Jane are a classic romantic pairing of opposites from Hollywood history. Tarzan, a man raised by apes, encounters Jane, a woman from the civilised world, and the two inevitably fall in love. Although the costumes are simple in nature, the minor details are what will make the outfits recognisable as the characters as well as memorable. These costumes works best when done as a couple, so enlist someone to fill in as the other half.

Wear a Speedo style swimming costume under the costume for modesty. The Tarzan costume is typically scantily clad, so the Speedo will ensure there are no costume malfunctions.

Cut a square of brown or tan fabric in half diagonally into two triangle-shaped pieces. The size of the square piece of fabric varies depending on your size, but it should be approximately 0.75 by 0.75 metre (2-1/2 feet by 2-1/2 feet).

Hold the first triangle piece of fabric in front of your waist so the tip of the triangle points down and the second piece of fabric is in back of your waist, over your rear with the tip pointing down. Tie the left and right edges of the two pieces of fabric together. The fabric drapes down in two points in the front and back from your waist.

Mold a spearhead out of tin foil and insert it into the top of an empty wrapping paper cardboard tube. Secure in place with a strip of silver duct tape to complete the spear, Tarzan's weapon of choice.

Wear your hair dishevelled and in front of your face if possible. If your hair is too short, add a shoulder length, brown wig. Add a pair of leather sandals or go barefoot for the authentic Tarzan look.

Find a camisole style tank top for the Jane ensemble. The tank top can have front tying, corset details or even touches of lace on the neckline, sleeves or hems to give it a vintage look. To achieve the Disney version of the Jane look, use an ivory or off-white version of the top.

Wrap a long, wide piece of colourfully printed fabric, such as the type used to make a sarong, around the waist. Tie it over the left or right hip to create a slit for the leg.

Create a more risque Jane costume by combining more revealing costume pieces.

Pair an animal print bra, such as leopard, or a midriff bearing tank top with an earth tone coloured mini skirt, such as in beige or dark brown.

Wear simple, leather sandals or opt to go barefoot for an authentic look.
