The Scotts Company produces a complete line of lawn and garden care products, including Ortho garden sprayers. Features include a built-in spray hose, application wand and thumb-operated control valve with an in-line filter. Tank sizes are one or two gallons. While Ortho sprayers are typically used for applying weedkiller, you can mix Miracle-Gro fertiliser with water to feed vegetables, flowers, plants, trees and shrubs. Miracle-Gro, also manufactured by Scotts, is designed to produce bigger and healthier flowers and vegetables.

  1. 1

Clean the sprayer tank thoroughly, especially if weedkiller was used in the Ortho sprayer. Push the sprayer pump handle all the way in, twist to the position labelled "B" and lift out the pump.

  2. 2

Add one tbsp of ammonia or TSP cleaner and 1/2-gallon of water into the open tank. Replace the pump in the tank and twist it clockwise into place. Pump the sprayer five or six times, then depress the trigger to spray the solution into a container or on a safe surface. The sprayer is now clean and ready for use.

  3. 3

Pull out the pump handle again. Add one tbsp of Miracle-Gro plant food powder for each gallon of water poured into the tank, following the label directions on the packaging. Don't fill the sprayer tank beyond the "Max Fill Line."

  4. 4

Replace the pump in the tank by turning it clockwise in place. Pressurise the tank by pumping the sprayer until it is difficult to pump. For a coarse spray, use fewer strokes. For a fine mist or long stream, use more strokes to increase pressure within the tank. Tighten the nozzle for the fine mist and loosen it a complete turn for a coarse or long-range spray.

  5. 5

Turn the sprayer upside down and direct the nozzle away from you toward the soil around the plants in your garden. Depending on the model, either squeeze the lever or push the button to apply the fertiliser, letting all the air escape from inside the tank.

  6. 6

Turn the sprayer right-side up, slowly unscrew the pump from the tank and remove it. Refill the tank with more Miracle-Gro solution, or rinse thoroughly with water to clean.

Tips and warnings

  • Apply Miracle-Gro every seven to 15 days to the soil around vegetables. Scotts recommends using one cup of solution per plant. As plants grow, increase the amount of Miracle-Gro to one gallon. For larger areas, spray for about 10 to 15 seconds per large plant.
  • As Miracle-Gro has some risks to humans or animals, dispose of properly, according to label directions.
