How to Draw a Woodpecker Step-by-Step

Those who live near wooded areas grow familiar with the woodpecker's distinctive sound. Many birds remain recognisable because of unique calls and melodious songs. The woodpecker announces its presence by less delicate means. The loud hammering of its bill makes this bird one of nature's favourite drummers. When drawing the woodpecker, pay special attention to the crown and bill of this bird. Strong diagonal lines on the head of this bird will suggest the signature strength of its beak.

  1. 1

Using a straight edge, draw a long, diagonal line. Orient this line so that it points toward the top left corner of your page.

  2. 2

On top of the diagonal line, draw a large egg shape. Draw this shape vertically so that the narrow tip points downward. Make this shape cover about two-thirds of the diagonal line. This forms the body of the woodpecker.

  3. 3

Draw a circle on top of the egg shape. Draw this circle so that it is evenly bisected by the diagonal line.

  4. 4

Draw a small triangle on the right side of the circle. Join these two shapes by tracing around the arms of the triangle and extending these lines over the circle. This forms the head of the woodpecker.

  5. 5

Draw a small circle in the centre of the woodpecker's head. Shade this circle darkly, using the tip of your pencil. This forms the eye of the woodpecker.

  6. 6

Extend a narrow triangle from the right side of the woodpecker's head. This forms the beak.

  7. 7

Draw a short, triangular shape on the top of the woodpecker's head. Make the top of this triangle curve slightly to form the crest.

  8. 8

Extend two long, vertical oval shapes over the back and bottom of the woodpecker's body. Elongate the bottoms of these ovals into pointed tips to form the back and tail feathers.

  9. 9

Draw a short, thick line extending from the right side of the woodpecker's body to form the leg. Draw a rough triangular shape at the bottom of this line to form the feet.
