There are many fundamental steps when drawing a woman. The proportions and features of the human body must be portrayed in a way that complement each other, while the positioning of the limbs must relate to realistic bending and movement. Many artists use a model or picture to add realism to the look of the female image. Drawing a woman standing takes patience and practice as you develop a style.

Select a picture of a woman standing that best reflects the image you have in your head. Study the picture well before beginning to sketch. Notice the slight differences in how one side of the body is positioned versus the other. Examine the perspective, texture and lighting.
Sketch the head of the woman. Use light pencil marks to create an oval-like outline until you are satisfied with the basic shape.
Sketch the body of the woman in reference guide. Keep the pencil strokes light through this section as well, paying close attention to the arms, torso and legs of the woman.
Add facial features to the woman's head, including eyes, nose, ears, mouth and hair. Study the picture of the woman carefully and slowly translate these images to the paper. Use light pencil strokes to define each of these features, allowing for easy erasing. Some artists divide the head into four equal sections to assist in creating these features.
Add details to the woman's body and clothing. Add texture of clothing, creases in fabric, shadows and other details.
Outline the woman's body and individual features with an ink pen to create a more bold look in the drawing. Let the ink dry before erasing the pencil marks.
Notice the different shadows cast on the woman in the reference picture. A common light source in the picture reflects light off certain areas of the woman's body, while other areas appear shaded. Use the pen or pencil to shade these particular areas. Add background such as a lamp, tree or horizon line. Sign and date your work.
