Three-dimensional purses, castles or treasure chests are only a few of the cake designs that have gained popularity in recent years. It used to be that creating a masterpiece out of cake was only something that pastry chefs and talented artists did, but now, with the help of the Internet and cake decorating television shows, everyone can create a masterpiece in their own kitchen. Chanel purse cakes are sophisticated, fun and are easy to make if you follow these simple directions.
Things you need
- White fondant
- Black fondant
- Fondant cutter or embosser
- Edible metallic sparkle paint
Cut a 9-inch/23cm round cake in half. Spread icing on one of the half circles and place the other piece on top. Stand the cake up so that the cut side of the cake is touching the cake plate.
Apply a crumb coat, or a thin layer of butter cream frosting, to the top and sides of the cake. This will make it easier to decorate the cake without cake crumbs getting in the way.
Roll out white ready-made fondant. Cut two half circles and one long rectangle to fit the shape of the cake. Use your fingers to gently smooth the edges together once the fondant is placed on the cake.
Use a fondant cutter or embosser with a quilted attachment to make the purse look hand stitched. Roll evenly spaced diagonal lines in one direction, then roll lines in the opposite direction. This will make a diamond quilted pattern.
Roll black fondant into a long snakelike shape and apply it to the purse seams. Cut off any excess fondant with a knife. Braid two pieces of black fondant together to make handles and apply to the cake.
Cut a long, flat, rectangular shape out of black fondant and place on top of the cake. This will be the portion upon which the zipper is placed.
Roll out a long snakelike shape and several smaller snakes out of white fondant. The scale of these will depend on the size of your black rectangle. Use these pieces to make a zipper and place it on the black rectangle. Paint it with edible metallic sparkle paint.
Cut the Chanel logo out of fondant and place it on the side of the cake.
