Flat panel televisions' appeal largely rests upon their clean, uncluttered appearance. In the past, large floor-standing televisions did the work of hiding the connected cables through their sheer bulk and size. Flat panels, especially those wall-mounted, do not have this trait. Hiding the wires leading to the flat panel is therefore a top priority to anyone wanting to maintain a clean and cable-free installation. Do-it-yourself wire moulding kits are available to hide these wires, regardless of the type of environment.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

Things you need

  • Wire-hiding channel moulding kit
  • Tape measure
  • Scissors or saw
  • Paint/stain (optional)

  1. 1

Measure from the middle of the back of the flat panel to the middle of the equipment rack or stand.

  2. 2

Cut the channel kit, following the measurements. Make the cut(s) using a pair of scissors or saw.

  3. 3

Pop off the cover of the channel kit. Press the cabling leading to the flat panel into the channel.

  4. 4

Remove the film protecting the adhesive strip from the back of the channel kit. Double-check your alignment with the wall and television/equipment rack. Press the channel to the wall.

  5. 5

Snap the channel kit's cover over the lower section housing the wires. Paint or stain the kit, if desired.

Tips and warnings

  • Routing power cords through a channel kit is code-compliant.
  • The adhesive on these kits is very strong. You may remove the upper layer of drywall upon removal. Always make sure the kit is in position prior to committing to its placement.
