Figure drawing isn't unlike drawing any other person or object in the natural world; it's about paying attention to the basic geometric shapes that create your subject. In drawing a simple football player, the best approach to take is drawing stick figures first to determine the pose you want your players to be in. This simple method of figure drawing helps you draw your football player in proportion and create a more realistic-looking figure overall.

Instructions

  1. 1

Draw a circle the size of a nickel in the top centre of your paper. Since this starting shape serves as the player's head, you can draw it as large as you want but realise the bigger the head, the less room you'll have for the remainder of the body. Conversely, the smaller the head the less room you'll have for detail.

  2. 2

Draw a straight line down from the bottom of the circle to create a torso line, the basis for the chest and pelvic region of the player. You can draw the arms in any manner you wish, but for this article we'll draw the player throwing an overhead pass. Picture an "S" lying on its side; draw this type of line slightly underneath the head to create the shoulders and arms. This line should be about half the length of the torso line.

  3. 3

Add two parallel lines attached to the bottom of the torso line to create the legs. Your basic stick figure is now complete. Begin beefing up your subject by adding elongated ovals to the arm and leg lines; once done, erase the original stick figure lines to flesh out your player. Add small circles to the wrists to make hands and two ovals to create the feet.

  4. 4

Draw a box shape over the torso line to add bulk to the player, which gives the appearance of a player's jersey as it hangs over his shoulder pads. Erase the torso line and draw in the little details like the player's number on the front of the jersey and the remainder of the player's uniform. Draw the helmet however you wish, whether it's a modern helmet and face guard or the older leather helmets.

  5. 5

Draw a small pointed oval in the player's top hand to make the football. Erase any errant lines and trace over your football player with the black ink if desired to make your art stand out.
