Webcams are small devices either built into your laptop computer or attached as a peripheral device. And while this compact video camera is able to connect you visually with friends and family around the world, technical issues can degrade the quality of video and audio communication. One of the most common technical issues with a webcam is echoing, which is when you or the person you're chatting with can hear feedback.

Turn down the audio for your computer by accessing the "Sounds and Audio Devices Properties" from your computer's control panel. This will open a dialogue box, which will let you manually reduce the volume coming out of your speakers. By doing so, you will reduce the sound your webcam microphone is picking up, thus reducing echo.
Turn off your laptop's built-in microphone if you're using a built-in webcam/microphone set-up. To do so, navigate to your computer's audio settings, and deactivate the microphone. Review the owner's manual for your laptop to determine exactly how to deactivate the built-in microphone while keeping the webcam turned on.
Purchase and use a USB headset instead of using your computer's speakers to hear the other person. USB headsets are available in a wide variety of styles and price ranges, and since the audio will be coming through the headset, the webcam microphone cannot pick up on the audio, thus eliminating echo.
Activate the echo reducer within your webcam preferences, if available. Some webcams offer an automatic echo reducer, which actively works to prevent echo from occurring. Check your webcam's owner's manual to determine if this feature is available.
Tips and warnings
- Always turn off music or your television when using your webcam to prevent an echo from forming.
- Do not continue a webcam conversation if you have a serious echo, as this may damage your computer's speakers.
