RealPlayer does not recognise certain media extensions such as Subtitle Text File (SRT). To get subtitles to play back with their related video content, you need to download the Subtitle Plugin for RealPlayer. This is a free plugin that can be found online. Most SRT plugins require that the video file be in Audio Video Interleave (AVI) format. Therefore, enabling SRT playback with your video file is a two-part process.

Instructions

  1. 1

Download the Subtitles Plugin for RealPlayer at softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Audio/Audio-Plugins/Subtitles-Plugin-for-RealPlayer.shtml. The plugin will automatically prompt you for installation after it has downloaded. Click "Run" from the pop-up menu.

  2. 2

Convert your video file into AVI format with a video encoder. You can use Mediacoder. It can be downloaded for free at mediacoder.sourceforge.net/.

  3. 3

Name your AVI file and your SRT file the same name. For example, they should be labelled "Yourmovie.avi" and "Yourmovie.srt."

  4. 4

Load your AVI file into RealPlayer. The Subtitles Plugin will automatically load the matching SRT file.

Tips and warnings

  • Use the "Tray" icon in RealPlayer to toggle the subtitles "On" or "Off."
