Although Facebook can be a good way for people both young and old to stay connected with friends, it can also present problems. Facebook requires that all account holders be age 13 or above. Concerned parents might want to closely monitor their child's Facebook account, and if problems occur, may find it necessary to deactivate the account completely. If you need to deactivate your child's Facebook account, follow a few simple steps. However, Facebook does not do permanent account deletions unless the account has been found to violate the site's terms of service.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Launch a Web browser and navigate to the Facebook login page.

  2. 2

Enter the email address and password for the child's account and click the "Login" button to the right.

  3. 3

Click "Account" on the right side of the page to bring up a drop-down menu.

  4. 4

Click "Account Settings" in the drop-down menu.

  5. 5

Scroll down to the final option on the Account Settings page, "Deactivate Account."

  6. 6

Click the "Deactivate" link directly across from Deactivate Account.

  7. 7

Select a reason for the account deactivation. If you wish, you may enter "Other" and type an explanation that this is your child's account and you want to delete it.

  8. 8

    Click "Confirm."

  9. 9

Enter the account password again in the pop-up window that appears. Click "Confirm" again.

  10. 10

Enter the Security Check words into the provided field. Press "Submit."

  11. 11

Watch the screen for the following message to confirm the account was closed: "Your account has been deactivated. To reactivate your account, log in using your old login e-mail and password. You will be able to use the site like you used to.

We hope you come back soon."

Tips and warnings

  • If your child is under age 13, you can have the account deleted permanently by using a different method. The "Report an Underage Child" page allows adults to report children under 13 who are using Facebook. Parents or other adults will be required to submit some type of verification that the child is underage before Facebook will delete the account, however.
