Figuring out the perfect gift may be enjoyable for some people, but others can find solace in the generic though generous gift card system set up by Visa. In fact, Visa gift cards often serve as the perfect gift to someone who is living or travelling outside the United States. With a Visa gift card in hand, study abroad students, travellers and expatriates can buy what they need at any retailer accepting debit or credit cards. All that is required is your own credit or debit card and a mailing address.

Instructions

  1. 1

Visit your local Visa gift card retailer, such as a local superstore or chemist. The cards will be generically labelled, i.e. "A Gift for You," and come in denominations of £16. The advantage of purchasing a gift card from a store is having the card in your hands the same day, which expedites the shipping process. You can also order a Visa gift card online. Ordering online may provide you the opportunity to personalise the gift card with the recipient's name and variable amounts. Unfortunately, many gift card websites do not offer international shipping, in which case you will have to wait to receive the card and then ship it yourself.

  2. 2

Purchase the amount intended for the recipient. Before purchasing, make note of the currency exchange rate in whichever country the gift card will be used. For example, sending a gift card worth £65 to a recipient in the United Kingdom will only allow the recipient to purchase approximately £60 worth of items.

  3. 3

Enclose the gift card in an envelope and take it to your local postal service, which may include the U.S. Postal Service, UPS or FedEx. Provide the mail clerk with the recipient's address and contact information, as well as a completed customs form that outlines what the package contains. The clerk should give you a receipt stub that contains a traceable number to ensure that the package arrives at the correct destination and on time. Be sure to have this before leaving the store.

  4. 4

Track your package using the receipt stub that you received from the mail clerk. This can be done by going onto the postal carrier's website and selecting the "Track A Package" link. Enter the tracking number from your receipt to receive a day by day summary of your package's progress.
