Instructions on How to Build a Pasta Bridge

Constructing a pasta bridge could be done for personal enjoyment or for a class project to see what shape of pasta is strongest. Spaghetti, which is round, can be used for a stronger bridge than a flat piece of linguine, for example. Some schools compete in pasta-bridge building contests, where the integrity of the bridge is tested and the strongest bridge wins.

Instructions

Things you need

  • Spaghetti, linguine or fettuccine
  • 8 marshmallows
  • Envelope
  • Scissors
  • Paperclip
  • Coins
  1. 1

Assemble 3 pieces of long pasta into a flat triangle. Place a small marshmallow where each piece of pasta meets by stabbing the pasta into the marshmallow. Repeat to form a second triangle.

  2. 2

Stab pieces of pasta at a 45-degree angle into each marshmallow to create a pyramid. Repeat on the other triangle.

  3. 3

Place a marshmallow at the location where the new pieces of pasta meet at the tip of the pyramid. Secure each piece of pasta into the marshmallow. Repeat for the other pyramid.

  4. 4

Stab a last piece of pasta through the 2 marshmallows that are at the tips of the pyramids to form your bridge.

  5. 5

Test the weight of your bridge by cutting an inch from the corner of an envelope to make a coin basket. Unbend a paperclip to make a hanger. Poke it into the side of the coin holder. Hang the coin holder from the pasta bridge, and add coins.
