Pine trees stay green all year long, making them an ideal choice for holiday wreaths. After being cut, however, pine needles eventually turn brittle and brown in the absence of water. You can extend the life of your pine wreath by carefully choosing and cutting branches and using a protective spray.
Cut pine branches in the middle of the day in nice weather, when the branches aren't wet from dew or precipitation. Use sharp pruning shears and cut the branches at a 45-degree angle. If possible, cut branches immediately before making the wreath.
Place the stems in water and keep them in a cool location until ready to use them in the wreath.
Remove pine seeds from the cones and spray the entire branch evenly with shellac or hairspray. The spray will make the branches shiny and hold moisture in, extending the life and colour of needles and cones.
Hang a completed wreath in a cool location away from a heat source. Avoid hanging the wreath between two exterior doors, since sunlight can become trapped between the doors, overheating the pine branches.
