Updated March 23, 2017

Many computers today are sold with built-in webcams. The webcam can be used to record video, take still pictures or conduct video calls using an application that can video conference, such as Skype. Skype allows you to use the webcam in your computer while talking to your friends and family online. However, if you are concerned about privacy or your kids safety while on Skype, you can disable the webcam using the settings in Windows.

Click "Start," and then select "Control Panel."

Click "Hardware and Sound."

Click "Device Manager" under "Devices and Printers."

Click the small arrow next to "Imaging Devices."

Double-click on your webcam in the drop-down list. The webcam's "Properties" window opens.

Click the "Driver" tab, and then click the "Disable" button.

Click "Yes" on the pop-up window to confirm you want to disable the webcam. The device is now disabled.
