How to cut a short textured crop
Short, textured styles look very feminine and chic on women. (Ryan McVay/Lifesize/Getty Images)

Cropped cuts--the super-short styles that hug the head--look great on both men and women. On a man, the cut appears rugged, textured and trendy. The same cut on a woman appears feminine, flirty and modern. Super easy to style, this unisex cut is a true wash-and-wear hairstyle. You can blow dry and add a little wax to style your cropped cut, or finger in some gel while the hair's wet and let it air dry; spike it up for some extra interest or let it hug your head to show off your prominent features.

Instructions

  1. 1

Attach the number 8 clipper guard to your clippers. Make sure the guard snaps on and does not move when pressure is applied.

  2. 2

Turn on the clippers, and start running them through your dry hair with the guard held against your scalp. Run the clippers all through your hair in every direction imaginable.

  3. 3

Set the clippers aside. Comb through your hair to check for long spots. Pay special attention to the hair around your ears. Use the clippers on any long spots that you find.

  4. 4

Pick up the thinning shears to texturise the ends of your hair. Comb your hair straight out from your head, and close the thinning shears on the ends of your hair--very close to the ends. Move up the hair shaft about 1/2 inch, and close the thinning shears on the hair a second time. Texturise all the ends.

Do not try to keep the ends of your hair even. Perfectly even short cuts look bulky and boxy. The ends should look jagged and uneven when you inspect them. Don't try to fix them by cutting them off blunt.

  5. 5

Comb through your hair to remove any loose hair. Leave the hair line natural for women. Edge the hair line with the bare blade of the clippers for men.

Tips and warnings

  • Keep the clipper blades well oiled to avoid pulling and tugging your hair and overheating the clipper motor.
