A space helmet typically has a rounded shape to provide oxygen to the astronaut and prevent him from suffocating in a vacuum. A round shape is difficult to make from one layer of paper, but it is simple to create a rounded shape with the use of glue and paper strips glued to a rounded balloon using papier mache. Use a balloon that is larger than the head of the person who will wear it so he can pull it over his head and wear it. You can line the face mask with clear plastic for more realism, or leave it open for easy breathing.

Blow up the balloon so that the circumference is one or two inches larger than the circumference of a child's head. Tie a knot in the end of the balloon.

Tear the newspaper into two-inch thick strips. Mix one part glue and one part water in a small bowl that you can rinse or throw away when finished.

Dip the strips into the glue mixture and layer them over the balloon. Allow each layer to dry for two or three hours before applying the next layer. Cover the balloon with a total of five layers.

Cut a hole into the bottom of the ball shape with scissors. Make sure the opening is large enough for the child to fit over their head. Cut a rectangular shape into one side of the balloon so the child can see out of the helmet. Remove the balloon pieces from the shell.

Reinforce the cut edges of the helmet with masking tape or duct tape. Paint the helmet white or any other space colour. Allow the paint to dry for two hours before allowing the child to wear the helmet.
