Recovering a deleted e-mail message on an older Facebook messaging system is impossible, but if you have upgraded to the new Facebook messaging platform, you can recover an archived message you thought you deleted. The new system automatically archives messages when you click the small "x" icon next to the message listing. Some users may think that clicking this button deletes the message, but it does not.

Sign in to your Facebook account and click "Messages" from the left column.
Scroll down to the bottom of the messages page.
Locate and click the "Archived" link.
Review the archived message and find the name of the person you were having a conversation with. All messages from a friend are grouped together in a threaded conversational format.
Go to the right side of that message listing and click the "Arrow" icon. The message disappears from the screen, returning you to the main inbox.
