Facebook notifications keep you informed when someone initiates communication with you on the site. The notifications are delivered primarily via e-mail, and sometimes text message, unless you disable the service. Facebook also sends an e-mail each week informing you of the upcoming birthdays of your friends. If the e-mails become more pesky than they are helpful, simply disable the notifications regarding birthdays. Stopping e-mails about birthdays will not stop other notifications.
