Presario 5000 computers were developed by Compaq and are currently sold by Hewlett-Packard. You can restore your computer to its factory settings in the event of a hard-disk crash or system failure. You can format the hard drive with the HP PC System Recovery tool. It deletes all the information on your hard drive and reinstalls Windows XP and the original software that came with your Presario 5000 along with its factory settings. Back up important data before performing a factory restore. You will need administrative rights to complete this task.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Disconnect any external storage devices connected to your computer. These include USB drives, external hard drives and even your printer. Do not disconnect the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and power cord.

  2. 2

Click "Start" and "All Programs." Click "Compaq Tools" and choose "Compaq PC System Recovery."

  3. 3

Click "Yes" when prompted to continue the recovery process. This will restart your computer to the recovery program. Click "OK" if/when prompted.

  4. 4

Click "Advanced" and select "Destructive Recovery." Click "Next" to continue.

  5. 5

Follow the prompts to complete the wizard. This will start the system recovery. Note that process may take as long as several hours, depending on the size of your hard disk and the amount of information stored in it.

  6. 6

Let your Presario 5000 restart after the system recovery is complete. It will continue into Windows set-up.

  7. 7

Follow the prompts to complete the Windows set-up. Click "Finish" when prompted. Your computer will be restored to its original factory settings.
