Unplug the USB cable from the computer and the NWZ-E440 to reset the connection, if the device doesn't charge. Confirm that you are using the supplied cable and securely plug both ends back into the computer and device. Sometimes the device fails to charge, if it's in a location that is colder or warmer than 5.00 or 35.0 degrees Celsius, respectively. Confirm that the computer is turned on and is not in sleep mode.
Allow the battery to charge for approximately five minutes, if the "Connected USB" or "Connecting" message doesn't appear on the NWZ-E440 after it's hooked up to the computer via USB cord. Unplug the USB cable from the computer and plug it into a different port. The current USB port might be broken or disabled. If the USB cable is plugged into a hub, unplug the cable and plug it directly into the computer.
Unplug the USB cable from the USB hub or extension cable, if the player becomes unstable while being charged or transferring files while connected to a computer. Also, avoid plugging the USB cord into the USB port of a keyboard, as that might be insufficient for the power requirements of the NWZ-E440.
Turn the NWZ-E440 over and insert a thin, small pin or end of a paper clip into the "Reset" hole. Press down on the hidden button to reset the player. If the "Reset" button is pressed during operation, data might be erased.
Hold down the "Back/Home" button on the left side of the keypad until the main menu appears, if you wish to format or initialise the NWZ-E440. Push the navigation button in the centre of the keypad area to select and the "Play/Pause" button in the centre of the navigation button to confirm the following functions in this order: "Settings," "Common Settings," "Format," "Yes" and "Yes." The NWZ-E440 begins to initialise and displays a message of "Memory Formatted" when finished. If initialised, all NWZ-E440 settings are restored to their defaults and all files -- including the operation guide -- are deleted from the device. Transfer files you wish to save to your computer or backup source before formatting.
