How to Make Circlet Crowns
Make circlet crowns from flowers. ( Images)

Circlet crowns are among the simplest of all crowns and are perfect for creating medieval or fantasy-themed costumes, such as those inspired by elves and fairies. Circlet crowns can be made of expensive and finely-worked materials such as gold or silver but a crown made of flowers is traditional, pretty and inexpensive to make and is at least as authentic as those made of more complicated designs and precious metals.

Skill level:

Things you need

  • Wire coathangers
  • Florists tape
  • Fresh or artificial flowers

  1. 1

Untwist wire coat hangers, allowing one coat hanger per crown.

  2. 2

Bend each coat hanger into a circle that will fit snugly onto the head of the wearer. Twist the ends around the main circlet so they do not stick out and wrap with florists' tape so there are no sharp ends. Repeat until you have made a sufficient number of circlet crowns.

  3. 3

Separate flowers into small bunches. Use five or six stems for small flowers or three to four stems for large flowers. Hold a bunch at a time against the wire of the circlet and tape in place with florists tape at the stems. Add another bunch of flowers. The heads of that bunch should overlap and cover the taped stems of the first bunch. Tape in place at the stems. Continue until you've covered the whole circlet in flowers. Repeat until you have covered all the circlet crowns you are making with flowers.

Tips and warnings

  • Ribbons are a pretty way in which to add extra decoration to your crown. Pick colours that match your flowers and knot them on tightly at the back of the crown before adding on the flowers. Leave the ribbons to trail down the back of the head when the crown is put on. If the ribbon is not already curly, draw it firmly over the blade of a large pair of scissors to add curl.
