Writing an apology card for having forgotten a birthday is easy, but admitting to the forgetfulness may be more difficult. Particularly important birthdays, such as the sweet 16, 21st, 40th, and 65th birthdays tend to signify important milestones in life and would be much more important than other birthdays. On these occasions, it is particularly important to apologise for the oversight.

  1. 1

On the left side of the opened card, express to the recipient how you are sorry about your having missed the birthday. Tell exactly how you feel, but do not attempt to make an excuse for your forgetfulness. This tends to be seen as improper.

  2. 2

Print "Happy Belated Birthday" under the printed sentiment (if any) in the card, then sign your name as you would normally do on any birthday card.

  3. 3

Place the card in the envelope, seal the envelope and affix the stamp. Mail the card as soon as possible. Avoid waiting any longer than is necessary to mail the card.

Tips and warnings

  • If you wish to include a monetary gift to the recipient, it is best to send a check. Gift cards and cash can be easily stolen and are untraceable.
