Vampire Knight is a Japanese manga set in a school. This particular school has two sets of students: human Day Class students and vampire Night Class students. The students wear black or white school uniforms that are mirrors of each other. Like most Japanese school uniforms, the basic uniform is a jacket and trousers or a skirt. Most of the details on the uniform can be replicated using fabric paint. When adding lines to the jacket, pre-draw them with Ivory soap to make sure you have them completely straight.

  1. 1

Select the style uniform you'll be wearing. Vampire students wear a white uniform while the human students wear black ones. Female students always wear a skirt.

  2. 2

Outline the edges of the jacket plus the cuffs and collar with the Ivory soap. Use a ruler to ensure that the lines are perfectly straight. Refer to images from the manga to make sure all of the piping lines on the front, shoulders, arms and back are placed correctly.

  3. 3

Paint alongside the marked lines with fabric paint. For a white uniform, use black fabric paint (reverse for a black uniform). Paint the front of the jacket first. After the front has dried, paint the back. To set the paint, iron over it according to manufacturer's instructions.

  4. 4

Make the armband. Cut a strip of fabric approximately 3 inches wide to wrap around your bicep. Hem the edges. Paint the rose pattern onto the centre of the armband with red fabric paint. Sew the ends together.

  5. 5

Assemble the rest of the uniform. Female students need a short skirt in their chosen colour and the boys wear dress trousers. Girls wear black knee socks regardless of their uniform colour. The dress shirt should be the opposite colour of the jacket and left untucked when worn. The shoes for both uniforms are black.

  6. 6

Tie a wide red ribbon around the neck of the female uniforms. The ribbon is tucked under the collar of the jacket and tied into a dangling bow. Boys wear a red tie.

  7. 7

Style your hair. Gel your hair so it looks slightly messy. Girls can wear pigtails or let their hair hang down if they have longer hair.

Tips and warnings

  • Instead of using fabric paint, you can use thin ribbon or the zig zag stitch on a sewing machine to make the piping lines.
