How to Make Insect Repellent

Updated February 21, 2017

There are many chemical-based insect repellents available for purchase in stores, but using a homemade repellent is more natural, smells better and works just as well. Many people do not know that flying insects, including mosquitoes, gnats and midges, are naturally repelled by various herbs and plants. Vanilla extract is highly effective in repelling flying insects and smells pleasant when you spray it on your skin.

Add 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract to an empty plastic spray bottle.

Fill the bottle with water, screw on the top and shake well.

Spray the mixture over your skin. Refrain from rubbing it in and let it air dry instead.

Make sure you are using real vanilla extract instead of an imitation extract.

Things You'll Need
