Connect your My Passport Essential drive to your computer using the supplied USB micro cable. Attach the micro side of the cable to your drive and the USB end to an open USB port on your computer.
Click "Start" on the lower left of the desktop. Click "All Programs," and then click "WD SmartWare." The WD SmartWare dashboard launches.
Click the "Settings" tab at the top of the WD SmartWare Software dashboard.
Click the "Security" button in the left pane of the resulting "Settings" window. The "Your Drive is Secure" dialogue box will launch.
Enter your current password in the "Password" field.
Select "Change Password."
Enter your new password in the "New Password" field. Enter your new password a second time in the "Verify Password" field.
Enter a hint in the "Password Hint" field. This hint is used to remind you of your password in case you forget it in the future.
Click "Save Security Settings."
