Fancy restaurants often decorate their tables by putting the napkins in the glasses, folded in an intricate display. This creates a nice atmosphere, and it's one that you can replicate in your own home. By folding the napkins in a fancy pattern yourself, you'll create the same appearance as the restaurant, giving your guests that nice atmosphere. There are many different folds you can do, but a good one to start with is the goblet fan fold.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

  1. 1

Place the napkin face down on the table in front of you. Pull the top half of it toward you, then fold the napkin in half.

  2. 2

Fold the napkin in half again, folding it from right to left and creasing the ends with your thumb.

  3. 3

Fold the right side of the napkin in toward the left side one inch, and crease the edge with your thumb. Fold the napkin over one more time, the exact amount as the first crease, but in the opposite direction. Repeat the process, folding back and forth, to create an accordion fold in the napkin.

  4. 4

Hold the napkin approximately one to two inches up from the bottom of the accordion fold and loop the short end of the napkin up to form a U-shape at the bottom, leaving a few inches of the folded end on top.

  5. 5

Insert the U-shape into the glass. Unfurl the top of the napkin to form a fan shape, similar to a seashell.

Tips and warnings

  • If you use a slightly starched napkin, this process is a bit easier to do.
